4 months old!

Dear Kayden-
You are 4 months old!! This past month you had a ton of new things going on! You had your first Christmas and we were all over the place! We were off of your schedule for the most part but you were still a great baby! Everyone enjoyed playing with you and some people in your family got to see you for the first time! Even though it was crazy, we all still had fun. Mommy and daddy enjoyed spending our first christmas with you. Even though you were not old enough to open the present by yourself you still enjoyed looking at all your new toys. A lot of them you can't quite play with yet, but soon enough!

You are still growing and learning and amazing mommy every day! You laugh out loud all the time now! You really like when mommy and daddy "scare" you. We say something really quickly at you and you just jump, but you think it's hilarious! You will laugh if we do it over and over again! You also smile at everyone! If they talk to you, you will smile at them! You have become quite a happy boy and I am so thankful!

You still really enjoy playing on your play mat, but you are still not too big of a fan of tummy time. We have to do it a lot because of physical therapy but you are getting close to rolling over. You just haven't quite figured out how to do it regularly yet.

You also LOVE standing up! It is so hard to get you to do anything else when we are holding you. You very rarely like to lay down when people hold you now. It's either sitting up or standing up. You have strong legs though and force people to make you stand up :)

You are starting to really grasp and play with toys now. You play with the toys on your carseat whenever you are in there and you also grab your toys on your play mat. You love to try and pull them down into your mouth even though they are hanging above your head. You try and put EVERYTHING in your mouth already, but you really enjoy putting your hands in your mouth. You eat your hands ALL. THE. TIME :)

We are still having issues with you sleeping but that's ok. You still sleep in the bed with mommy and daddy but at least you are starting to sleep 6 hours straight at night. You usually wake up around 5:30 in the morning for a bottle and will then go back to sleep until 9 or 930, which mommy is ok with because she goes back to sleep too! I still have to hold you when you nap, but you have recently started falling asleep if mommy lays you in her bed and lays down with you for a little bit. You can't stay in mommy's bed forever though so you are going to have to get use to the crib soon!

This month mommy also had to switch you to being solely formula fed. While this was really hard on mommy, you absolutely loved formula and had no problems at all once we found the right type. You were much happier once we switched you to formula so while mommy was sad that she was no longer nursing, I knew it was the right decision and you were getting more food. I know you will still be a smart boy even if you are fed formula :)

You continue to grow and amaze mommy and i can't wait to see what the next month has in store. You are growing up so quick though so I would really appreciate it if you slowed down just a little. I am loving the fact that I can be home and spend all the time in the world with you while you are so young though. You are an amazing little boy and you have brought so much joy to me. I love you so much baby boy!
Love- Mommy

Sleep Training night 3

After an hour of crying I gave in and went to go get the sweet boy. You could tell the poor baby's legs were hurting so he gets a little extra love tonight. I'm sure tomorrow night will be 20 times harder now but oh well. We will eventually get the hang of it.

4 month stats!

**There is no adorable 4 month picture today.... I forgot to do it before we went to the pediatrician, and he is currently sleeping. We will probably wait so we have a happy baby for the picture :)**

We had Kayden's 4 month appointment today! He did great... but we did have the dreaded 4 month shots. I left the room to fix a bottle so I wouldn't be in the room when they gave the shots. I bawled last time and really just didn't want to be in there when they did it. Nick was in there with him and can handle it so I left. But it didn't help. Let's just say... Kayden has lungs and he was not afraid to use them. I was in the bathroom around the corner and could hear him screaming. I almost lost it in the bathroom because he was screaming so hard. Nick said Kayden's face turned red, and didn't breath for a second and then all of a sudden let out the loudest scream and he just continued screaming. POOR BABY!!! I came back in and he was still crying so I gave him the bottle and he calmed down. Miserable! I'll be happy when we get to the point where he doesn't have to have shots every 2 months! I felt so bad for him and Nick said Kayden looked at him like nick was the one that gave him the shots so Nick kept saying i wasn't the one to give you the shots! haha. Poor Kayden looked so hurt afterwards. I think these were even harder than the 2 month shots!

We also got the all clear to start solid foods! EEEEEKKK! My baby can start eating REAL food?!?! NO WAY! We probably won't actually start giving him anything for another month but just the fact that he COULD have real food blows my mind! We obviously start with cereal and then he said we wait 4 days and can start vegetables, waiting 4 days to introduce each new food. I will probably wait a little longer with the cereal though. I'm thinking we may start cereal around 4.5-5 months and then probably won't start vegetables until closer to 5.5-6 months. When we do start... trust me there will be pictures! and videos! and a blog post! :)

Now for the stats:
Height: 25 inches (average for babies his age)
Weight: 13 pounds 1 ounce (25 percentile)

We have a tall skinny boy. He is staying with his growth curve or whatever so the doctor isn't concerned about his weight. He said he is just fine! just a skinny little boy! :)

Sleep Training... Again!

So a little while ago I posted about our sleep training events. Well, I quit after that night and waited until I talked to a friend of mine who has done sleep training with her daughter and was successful at it.

She came over last wednesday and gave me a book called "Sleeping through the night" by Jodi A. Mindell, Ph. D.. It was a very helpful book on sleep training and had much more information than the websites I was reading. It said to make bedtime the same time every night and do the bedtime routine the exact same way. Also, it said to go in and check on the baby as many times as you want, whenever you want but to try and resist the urge to pick him up. It went through what it called the "Basic Bedtime Method" which we followed. It went into detail about each step but the jist of it is the following:

step one: set bedtime -set bedtime for baby to go to bed. this is important to help set your baby's internal clock so that his body is accustomed to falling asleep at exactly the same time every day

step two: bedtime routine -babies relish routine. routine is essential to your child's being able to fall asleep easily and quickly. end of routine should be done in child's room.

step three: bedroom environment- establish a consistent bedroom environment so that when he wakes up in the middle of the night, the same thing is going on. positive sleep associations and negative sleep associations are big for this one. positive sleep associations are things that will always be there, negative are things that when he wakes up, they won't be there but were there when he fell asleep. (example: i play music on a cd player in his room of soft lullabies. i put it on repeat so that it is a positive association and will still be playing if he wakes up in the middle of the night. a negative association would be something like rocking a baby to sleep, etc.) make sure your child's bedroom is the same all the time when he is sleeping

step four: put down awake- this teaches them to soothe themselves and learn how to fall asleep on his own. "he will probably call for you, cry, or scream. Most likely he will do all three at once. Wait. then do a simple checking routine. Go back into your child's room. Tell him that it is okay. Tell him again that it is time for him to go to sleep. Pat him or touch him briefly if you wish. don't pick him up. don't cuddle him. be gentle but firm. remain fairly neutral and stay for a brief time, no more than one minute." make the visit boring.

Night one: we did our bedtime routine- bath, bottle, a story from his jesus storybook bible (love!), goodnight moon, and then cuddle time while singing jesus loves me. I rock him a little while we have cuddle time and have his music playing in the background. i enjoy just rocking him and getting him drowsy before putting him in his crib. I then laid him down (drowsy but awake) and of course the screaming began. The first night was rough. I cried and cried, and nick was the one that kept going in to calm him down. I kept going back and forth whether or not this was worth it, whether i was doing the right thing, whether i should just go get him and wait until he was older. but i stuck with it. eventually after an hour and a half he fell asleep. (i said if it last longer than two hours i was done). He woke back up at 12:30 and i fed him and let him sleep with us so he only spent 2 1/2 hours in there but when you compare it to 0 seconds in the crib, it's a step. And that's another reason I love the book so much because it has a section on "what to do if your child wakes during the night" and it said to do what you normally do. "if you usually take her to your bed, then do that. research has found that once a baby is falling asleep quickly and easily at bedtime, then she'll naturally start sleeping through the night in about two weeks."

Night one was on thursday night, and unfortunately friday night we were out really late at my mother in laws house. i attempted it but felt bad for trying to get him to sleep on his own since it wasn't the normal time and we really didn't even do much of the bedtime routine so i ended up just putting him in the bed with us.

Night one (again, since we screwed it up friday night and started over saturday night): Bedtime routine, laid him down, and he cried for about an hour with us going back in and calming him down. he eventually fell asleep while i was in there calming him down. i just laid my hand on his stomach and put some gentle pressure on it because i think he had some gas, and he fell asleep while i was in there (we try to get in and out in under 1 minute so that shows you how fast he fell asleep). he slept until 1, i fed him and then laid him back down in his crib since he was not very awake after eating his bottle and he fell right to sleep in his crib. he woke again at 3 crying and i knew he wasn't hungry so i tried to see if he would put him self back to sleep and waited 10 minutes. he didn't so i brought him back in the bed with us where he slept until 7:30.

night two: bedtime routine, laid him down and he cried for only 20 minutes. but it wasn't the really upset crying like it was the past nights. he would have periods of calm during crying this time where i could tell he was starting to soothe himself by staring at his hands and playing with his "lovey" (a small little blanket with a little bear head on it that we give him while he sleeps so that he associates that with sleep... another recommendation from the book). 30 minutes after i put him down, he was asleep and i only had to go in and comfort him 2 times, and then once more after he had fallen asleep but woke up screaming, yet again i think from gas. he quickly went right back to sleep though. we are still on night two tonight so i don't know how the night will go but my main concern is falling asleep in his crib.

Overall, I am very impressed and happy with the outcome. I do not mind him coming back into our room during the night and still waking up for a feeding because he is still on the small side for his age and he is still not eating as much as he should be for his age during the day so I want him to eat as much as he can and i enjoy having him in there and waking up to him in the mornings. i just really needed him to start going to sleep at a decent time and having some time for myself and my husband without having to hold a sleeping baby until we decide to go to sleep in our room.

The book also has a section on "nap training" but recommends waiting two weeks after beginning the sleep training at night before moving on to nap training so we will be waiting a little bit to do that. i'm looking forward to the day where i can lay kayden down in his crib for naps and making use of that time too!

This whole process i know will make kayden a much happier and well rested baby, which is what i had to keep telling myself through the hour long crying and screaming the other night. I did tell myself that if it was still taking an hour by night three and he was still screaming, i would quit. but he has calmed down by night two so we will be continuing the sleep training. I was concerned about Kayden getting the rest that he needed because i felt like he wasn't getting the sleep he needed in our room, and being able to put yourself to sleep is something that everyone needs to know how to do. the book said it best when it said "you have to teach a baby how to crawl and walk, sleeping is no different." while i am not a supporter of the "cry it out" method. i do support letting him cry for a little bit (i never went longer than 5 minutes) and calming him down and reassuring him that we were still here and that he is alright. He needed to learn how to soothe himself, and I think he is starting to get the hang of it.

It wasn't easy, and I cried a long with him, and prayed that God would make it easier quickly because I wasn't sure how long I could handle the crying. I also prayed constantly that if I was doing something wrong, then God would make it clear quickly that I was not doing the right thing. But after night two of sleep training, and making night two much easier than the first night, I think we are going in the right direction.

However, I would have started sleep training the week he is suppose to get his 4 months shots. Night three may be interesting. I'm dreading the 4 months shots tomorrow, but I am really excited to talk to the pediatrician about the improvement in Kayden's neck, see how much he has grown, and just overall ask the pediatrician some questions that I've had. Update will come :)

Rolling over!

Since this blog serves as a type of memory book I have to post that today at physical therapy Kayden rolled over from his belly to his back for the first time with no help!! I was so excited and announced to the PT that it was his first time doing that so she had him do it again!! This was big and exciting for us since Kayden will have a little bit of difficulty with these milestones because of his neck. Generally they say they start doing this at about 3 months and he is about to turn 4 months so not to bad! He is doing great with sitting up and grabbing things so overall the PT is encouraged and said he will be able to do almost everything at an average rate especially when his neck is normal.

I haven't tried to get him to do it again since PT because he is so worn out from PT but we are going to see if he will do it later tonight for daddy so a video is to come!

Christmas!!

So, being December 31st I feel as if I should post about Christmas before the new year!

Like always Christmas was crazy around here. On Christmas Eve we had Christmas with one set of nick's grandparents and the rest of the extended family. If you remember my separation anxiety post a couple days ago, we saw it in full swing here. Kayden was asleep and I passed him to one of Nick's aunts while I ate. Well, he woke up while she was holding him and seemed to be fine. She turned him around and he was facing me on the couch but I don't think he actually saw me. He was just staring at one of Nick's younger cousins and then all of a sudden let out the LOUDEST scream I have EVER heard come out of the kid. There was no warning, it was just a sudden scream. I obviously jumped up since I have never heard that scream before and as soon as I got in his face to where he could see me he was fine. The beginning stages of separation anxiety... i think so. Then we went to Centerpoint Church with Nick's parents for their Christmas Eve service. It was a great service but a rough one since we were all missing little Avery. I, however, do not have any pictures of this because my camera battery was dead and when I charge it it only holds for about an hour so I am patiently waiting for my birthday to get a new camera battery :) I know his mom has a couple though so no worries, it was documented :)

Christmas Day we started at my parents house in the morning and opened gifts with Audrey. It was so much fun with her this year and I can't wait until next year when they will both be older! She enjoyed taking the paper off and playing with her presents. They were both spoiled with all the toys they got!

We then went over to Nick's parents house where we celebrated Christmas with his family and other set of grandparents. Yet again, I have no actual pictures of this but I know his mom does :) There we were yet again spoiled. Nick's mom bought everyone in the family a pair of TOMS. Even Avery and Kayden! I CAN NOT wait for Kayden's foot to be big enough to wear them. I think they should fit in the next couple months. Don't worry, the first time he wears them there will be pictures! Avery, yet again, was not with us so it wasn't the most joyful Christmas but we can not wait until we get to see him again and actually celebrate Christmas with him. I was reminded that Christmas does not have to be on December 25th, but we can celebrate it whenever the family is together. I can't wait for him to open his presents from us! I think he will love them. I can't wait for next year when Avery and Kayden will both be together for Christmas and both be old enough to really enjoy unwrapping presents!

Christmas night we went down to Paige and Jeremy's house where Audrey got to play with all her new toys and Paige made lamb. I don't think I have ever had lamb before, and she had never made lamb before but it was DELICIOUS! definitely a meal worth having again!! Audrey also had her "all i want for christmas is my auntie" shirt on so of course I have to include a picture of that :)

The day after Christmas we went to my grandmother's house and had Christmas with my mom's side of the family! This is always fun since there are so many people! Kayden did great! I was a little concerned since it was a lot of people that he doesn't see a whole lot but we didn't make the mistake that we did at Nick's grandfathers house so we didn't have any freak out sessions! :)

That night my dad's side of the family came over to my mom's house and we had Christmas with them.

Last but not least mommy and daddy had Christmas with Kayden. We had every intention on waking up Christmas morning and doing it before we went to my parents house, however Kayden slept for a long time that morning and before we knew it we needed to leave. We knew he wouldn't remember this Christmas so I wasn't upset about not getting to do it on Christmas morning.

We had a ton of left over babies r us gift cards from when Kayden was born so we decided we would go get him toys and wrap them up for Christmas. We got toys he could play with now and some for when he gets older since his birthday isn't until September.

Sleep Training Night One

So, I decided to try sleep training. Since putting Kayden on formula I thought we should try this since he has had a much more pleasant demeanor, goes a little longer between feedings, and is also 3.5 months old. Everything I read said that you can start sleep training at 3 months so why not.

Unfortunately, it didn't go so well. Kayden screamed, and screamed, and screamed. I can't handle the screaming. After reading other things, I decided to try the "no-cry" approach because I just can't do the "cry it out". With this method, I put him down after our bed time routine, drowsy but awake. I left the room where he was content for a couple minutes. And then the screaming started. I went back in there patted his stomach to try and calm him down. Well, patting my child on his stomach doesn't exactly calm him down.... it actually pisses him off even more. So I left again to regroup and attempt the "calm down but not pick up" routine again. Finally after 30 minutes I picked him up, burped him, and laid him back down. To where we started it all over again. Another 30 minutes pass, I picked him up tried to burp him and put him back down. After an hour and a half I caved, picked him up and he went right to sleep. I rocked him for a little bit and then laid him back down. He slept for 20 minutes where he then again woke up. I tried again for a little while and then gave up. He went into our room where he slept from 11-4.

I am going to try again tonight but start everything a little earlier, at 7:30 rather than 8:30 and see if that helps at all. If not, I'm postponing the sleep training until the weekend. Nick has to get up at 4 in the morning and keeping him up with a screaming baby trying to do sleep training is just not fair to him.

While trying to read other things this morning, I came across this quote from Dr. Sears website that really helped me.

"An important fact for you to remember is that your baby's sleep habits are more a reflection of your baby's temperament rather than your style of nighttime parenting. And keep in mind that other parents usually exaggerate how long their baby sleeps, as if this were a badge of good parenting, which it isn't. It's not your fault baby wakes up."

This really helped because I felt like I was a terrible parent because my child can't put himself to sleep or sleep for long periods of time. It's not for lack of trying. We have tried a lot of different things but nothing is working. We are working on it... he just hasn't gotten it yet.
